Two University of Lagos Ph. D Graduands were among the eight Awardees of the 2005 edition of the Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Award Scheme (NUDTAS).
At the award presentation ceremony organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) at Usmanu Donfodiyo University, Sokoto, NUC Director of Research and Innovation, Professor O. V. Ekechukwu, said the eight Awardees emerged from 46 nominations received from Universities across the country – University of Lagos, 2; Usman Donfodiyo University, Sokoto, 2; University of Benin, 1; University of Calabar, 1; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, 1; and University of Ibadan, 1.
He said award presentation ceremonies shall be rotated amongst University campuses to ensure adequate sensitization and enable Awardees address a larger academic community.
Professor Ekechukwu said the nominations for 2006 and 2007 awards are on now and that award presentations will be organized as soon as winners emerge.
Highlight of the two day ceremony was a 30 minutes oral presentation by each Awardee on the highlights of his/her award winning Thesis.
Delegates from University of Lagos to the ceremony were led by the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe and included, Supervisors of the Awardees, Representatives of Board of School of Postgraduate Studies and two Ph. D Candidates as directed by the NUC.
The Awardees – Dr. Theophilus Fashanu of Systems Engineering Department received award for his Thesis - “Contaminant Tracking in Heterogeneous Reservoir: A Space – Time Conservation Element /Solution Element Numerical Approach” which emerged winner in Engineering, while Dr. Sunday Oyediran of Building Technology Department, received an award for his Thesis – “Effects of Micro- Economic Varieties on Building Construction costs in Nigeria: Economic Model”, which emerged winner in Environmental Sciences”.
Dr. Theophilus Akinfenwa Fashanu joined the services of University of Lagos in 1998. He had his Bachelors Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife and later a Masters Degree in Engineering Analysis, University of Lagos, where he graduated with distinction in 1997.
Dr. Fashanu is the Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department. His research interest is in Computational and Environmental Fluid Mechanics.
Dr. Olukayode Sunday Oyediran joined the services of University of Lagos in 1996. He had his Bachelors Degree in Quantity Surveying from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife and later a Masters Degree in Construction Management at the University of Lagos in 1998.
Dr. Oyediran is the Registrar of the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria.
His research interest is in Construction Economics, International Construction and Information Technology in Construction
