Prof. CHUKWU, Lucian Obinnaya

Prof. CHUKWU, Lucian Obinnaya is the current Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies and former Head, Department of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, Akoka – Yaba, Lagos – Nigeria. He was trained at the University of Lagos where he obtained his doctorate degree in Ecosystem Health and Pollution Management. He later proceeded to the Coastal Resources Institute, University of Rhode Island, USA where he had post doctoral training in Integrated Coastal Management. He has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Lagos for over twenty years and has supervised and graduated several Ph.D and M.Sc degree candidates.

His research efforts over the years have resulted in the publication of several peer reviewed papers in recognised journals on ecosystem health and pollution management. His current research efforts focus on the development and validation of multiple biomarkers of exposure and effects of human induced stressors on indigenous economically and ecologically important fish and macro-benthos; as well as biodiversity studies of inshore and coastal marine ecosystems.

Prof Chukwu has been a Consultant to many national and international agencies including the Federal Ministry of Environment where he has participated in various aspects of Environmental Impact Assessment Studies (EIA). He has been Project/Team Leader in several EIA Studies in line with World Bank Guidelines and IFC Performance Standards in Aviation, Infrastructure, Ports and Harbours and the Oil and Gas subsector.  He has been Member, Environmental Impact Study Group on Nationally Coordinated Research Programme (NCRP) of the World Bank funded National Agricultural Research Project (NARP); Member, Expert Group Review Panel on GEF International Waters Project within the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan in collaboration with UNIDO (PTC/ECB) Vienna, Austria; IMO International Regional Expert on Coastal and Marine Environment in West Africa in support of the Glo-Ballast Partnership Programmes under the  auspices of Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME); UNIDO International Regional Expert on Integrated Coastal Management on Building Capacity for the implementation of Integrated Coastal Management in Africa in support of the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan and GEF/LME Projects under the  auspices of Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME).

He has participated and served as resource person in several national and international conferences, workshops and training programmes in Europe, North America, Middle East, Africa and Asia. He belongs to several professional associations including Science Association of Nigeria (SAN); Nigerian Environmental Society (NES); Environmental Practitioners Association of Nigeria (EPAN); Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN); Nigerian Association for Aquatic Sciences (NAAS); International Water Association (IWA) UK and International Association for Environmental Impact Assessment (IAIA).  He is member Board of Trustees of DOAM Foundation, a non-governmental, non-profit organisation that is committed towards touching the lives of under-privileged children in society and accident victims.

Prof. Chukwu is happily married with children.
